Parrot OS 6.4 Released With Major Updates to Popular Penetration Testing Tools

The Parrot Security team has officially released Parrot OS 6.4, marking what will likely be the final version of the 6.x branch before the transition to Parrot 7.0.

This latest iteration brings significant updates to core penetration testing tools, kernel improvements, and enhanced system components, reinforcing its position as a leading security-focused Linux distribution for cybersecurity professionals and ethical hackers.

Parrot OS 6.4 delivers substantial updates to its arsenal of penetration testing tools, with several flagship applications receiving critical enhancements.

Metasploit has been upgraded to version 6.4.71, while PowerShell Empire now runs on version 6.1.2, accompanied by Starkiller 3.0.0 for improved post-exploitation capabilities.

The distribution also incorporates Netexec 1.4.0, replacing the previous NetExec implementation, and introduces Caido 0.48.1, a modern web application security testing platform.

The wireless security toolkit has been strengthened with airgeddon 11.50, and web application testing capabilities have been enhanced through BeEF-XSS 0.5.4.0.

Additionally, the system now includes updated wordlists with Seclists 2025.2 and Seclists-lite 2025.2, providing security professionals with the latest password and payload collections for their testing scenarios.

New additions to the pre-installed toolkit include netcat-openbsd, goshs, dbd, and enhanced integration with tools like Sliver and Rocket.

The parrot-menu system has been updated with new desktop entries, making tool access more streamlined for users conducting security assessments.

Parrot OS 6.4 Released

Under the hood, Parrot OS 6.4 introduces significant system-level improvements, most notably the upgrade to Linux kernel 6.12.32, providing enhanced hardware compatibility and security patches.

The distribution now officially supports Microsoft development tools, including PowerShell 7.5 and .NET runtime versions 5 through 9, expanding its utility for diverse security testing scenarios.

Firefox ESR has been updated to version 140.0 with custom privacy-focused patches maintained through a specialized dpkg trigger system that prevents telemetry data collection.

The parrot-core package received important fixes addressing $HOME path issues and autocompletion problems, while implementing enhanced security by making the /root directory no longer world-readable.

System package updates span across critical components including updated DNS utilities, improved BTRFS file system support, enhanced cryptographic libraries, and the latest LibreOffice suite (version 4:25.2.3-2).

The distribution also incorporates updated Mesa graphics drivers (25.0.4-1) and improved systemd integration (254.26-1), ensuring better hardware support and system stability.

Future Development and Availability

Parrot OS 6.4 represented a transitional release as the development team prepares for the upcoming Parrot 7.0, which will be built on the foundation of Debian 13.

The current version serves as a testing ground for refined build scripts and automated processes that will streamline future releases.

The development team has announced plans for Parrot 7.0 to include multiple desktop environment options, RISC-V architecture support, and additional features currently under development.

This strategic shift demonstrates the project’s commitment to expanding hardware compatibility and user choice.

Users can download Parrot OS 6.4 through official channels, with torrent files available as alternative download methods to bypass network restrictions.

Existing installations can be upgraded using the standard APT package management system via sudo parrot-upgrade or sudo apt update && sudo apt full-upgrade commands, though fresh installations are recommended for optimal performance, particularly when upgrading from significantly older versions.
