The Federal Bureau of Investigation has issued a stark warning about an evolving cybercriminal ecosystem called “Hacker Com,” a sophisticated subset of the international threat group known as “The Com.”
This primarily English-speaking network comprises multiple interconnected criminal organizations whose members, including many minors, orchestrate complex cyberattacks that have escalated from digital crimes to real-world violence.
Hacker Com represents a broad community of technically advanced cybercriminals with documented connections to ransomware-as-a-service (RaaS) groups.
These actors engage in an extensive array of criminal activities including distributed denial-of-service attacks, ransomware deployment, cryptocurrency theft, and the compromise of personally identifiable information.
The group’s operations extend to selling government email accounts, conducting phishing campaigns, developing malware, and executing SIM swapping attacks against high-value targets.
The cybercriminals employ sophisticated tools to facilitate their operations and conceal their identities, including remote access trojans, phishing kits, voice over internet protocol (VoIP) providers, voice modulators, virtual private networks, and cryptocurrency cash-out services.
Open-source intelligence indicates that Hacker Com groups have claimed responsibility for several high-profile attacks and maintain active affiliations with established ransomware organizations.
Cryptocurrency theft serves as the primary motivator for many Com actors, often creating internal conflicts within the organization.
Members frequently become targets themselves due to perceived slights, rival group memberships, or public displays of cryptocurrency wealth.
The FBI reports that members regularly screen-share and boast about profits from cryptocurrency thefts, sometimes exceeding millions of dollars, which ironically makes them targets for other criminal actors within their own network.
Escalation to Real-World Violence
The intensification of online conflicts has spawned a dangerous evolution within The Com ecosystem, giving rise to “In Real Life (IRL) Com” and “Extortion Com” subgroups.
IRL Com specifically aims to facilitate real-world acts of violence stemming from online disputes, representing a significant escalation from purely digital crimes.
Criminal activities have expanded to include physical extortion involving kidnapping, torture, threats against family members, and the use of firearms to steal cryptocurrency.
Extortion Com primarily focuses on exploiting children, with members targeting minors through threats of doxing, swatting, and real-world violence if their demands are not met.
This represents a particularly troubling development as it demonstrates how cybercriminal profits are being reinvested into crimes targeting vulnerable populations.
Law Enforcement Response
The FBI has identified swatting as both a service offered by Com subgroups and a common retaliation tactic used during internal conflicts.
These actors use swatting strategically to divert law enforcement attention during cryptocurrency thefts or corporate network intrusions, taking advantage of the relative ease with which false emergency reports can be arranged.
For victims of these crimes, the FBI recommends immediate contact with emergency services if facing life-threatening situations, followed by consultation with healthcare providers for mental health support.
The agency advises victims to immediately contact account providers to regain control of compromised accounts and report incidents to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center and local field offices.
Additional resources include the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children’s “Take It Down” service for minors victimized by explicit content sharing.
