In a coordinated international law enforcement operation, authorities have successfully dismantled one of the world’s largest darknet marketplaces, “Archetyp Market,” resulting in the arrest of its alleged German administrator and the seizure of millions in assets.
The operation, involving German, Spanish, Dutch, and Swedish authorities, represents a significant blow to illegal drug trafficking networks operating on the dark web, with the platform estimated to have facilitated €250 million in illicit transactions before its shutdown.
The Frankfurt am Main Public Prosecutor’s Office Central Office for Combating Internet Crime (ZIT) and the Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA) spearheaded the investigation that culminated in the arrest of a 30-year-old German citizen at his Barcelona residence on June 11, 2025.
Spanish National Police special units executed the arrest operation as part of the broader international effort to dismantle the criminal network.
The suspect is accused of serving as the primary administrator of “Archetyp Market,” working alongside other moderators to operate what authorities describe as one of the longest-standing criminal trading platforms on the dark web.
The marketplace primarily facilitated the sale of illegal narcotics, including amphetamine, cannabis, fentanyl, heroin, and cocaine, with transactions conducted exclusively through the cryptocurrency Monero to maintain anonymity.
At the time of the takedown, the platform hosted approximately 17,000 sales offers from roughly 3,200 registered vendors, serving an extensive customer base of approximately 612,000 accounts.
The suspect faces charges under Sections 29a and 30a of the Narcotics Act for gang-related illegal trafficking in significant quantities of narcotics.
Massive Evidence Seizure
Law enforcement agencies conducted simultaneous searches across multiple countries, targeting properties linked to the criminal operation.
The suspect’s Barcelona apartment was searched alongside additional properties in Hanover, the Minden-Lübbecke district in Germany, and Bucharest, Romania.
These coordinated raids yielded substantial evidence, including eight mobile phones, four computers, and 34 data storage devices.
Authorities also seized approximately €7.8 million in assets connected to the illegal operation, demonstrating the significant financial scale of the criminal enterprise.
The Dutch National Police played a crucial role in the operation by successfully identifying and shutting down the server infrastructure that powered the marketplace, which was hosted at a data center in the Netherlands.
The technical shutdown of the platform’s infrastructure effectively disabled access to the marketplace, with authorities displaying a security banner announcing the takedown and the arrest of the German operator.
This coordinated approach ensured that the platform could not simply migrate to alternative hosting arrangements.
Network Associates
The investigation extended beyond the primary administrator, with coordinated searches conducted across Germany and Sweden targeting moderators and vendors associated with the platform.
According to Report, German authorities executed searches at 20 additional properties, including two in North Rhine-Westphalia, two in Lower Saxony, one in Hesse, and one in Baden-Württemberg.
Swedish law enforcement conducted parallel operations resulting in seven additional arrests of individuals connected to the marketplace’s operations.
The comprehensive raids across both countries yielded significant evidence, including 47 smartphones, 45 computers and notebooks, various narcotics, and additional assets from all suspects involved.
The extensive data seized during these operations is currently undergoing analysis and is expected to provide investigators with additional leads for further criminal proceedings.
This successful international cooperation demonstrates the effectiveness of coordinated law enforcement efforts in combating sophisticated darknet criminal enterprises and their global networks.
