Microsoft has introduced a significant change to its Windows 11 version 24H2 system restore functionality as part of its June 2025 security update, reducing the retention period for system restore points from 90 to 60 days.
This modification, delivered through the latest cumulative update, represents a notable shift in how Windows manages system recovery options for users.
The change affects millions of Windows 11 users who rely on system restore points as a safety net when installing new software or making system modifications.
Previously, users could access restore points created up to three months prior, but the new 60-day limitation will apply to both current installations and future versions of Windows 11 24H2.
Microsoft has indicated that this restriction will become a permanent feature moving forward.
The release also includes a servicing stack update (KB5059502) version 26100.4193, which improves the reliability of Windows’ update installation process.
Servicing stack updates ensure that devices can successfully receive and install future Microsoft updates by strengthening the underlying update infrastructure.
Security Enhancements
The June 2025 security update delivers critical security patches alongside the restore point changes, building upon improvements from the previous KB5058499 update released in May 2025.
One of the most significant fixes addresses a persistent issue with Windows Hello for Business authentication, specifically resolving problems that prevented users from signing in with self-signed certificates when using the Key Trust model.
This Windows Hello fix addresses a pain point that had affected enterprise users and organizations implementing advanced authentication protocols.
The security update also includes comprehensive patches for various Windows operating system vulnerabilities, though Microsoft has directed users to consult the Security Update Guide website for detailed information about specific security issues addressed.
The update maintains Microsoft’s incremental approach to system updates, ensuring that devices with previously installed updates only download and install new components rather than redundant files, minimizing bandwidth usage and installation time.
AI Components Receive Major Updates
Microsoft has also updated several artificial intelligence components as part of this release, signaling the company’s continued integration of AI capabilities into Windows 11.
Three key AI components received version updates to 1.2505.838.0, including Image Search, Content Extraction, and Semantic Analysis functionalities.
These AI component updates reflect Microsoft’s broader strategy to embed intelligent features throughout the Windows operating system, enhancing user productivity and system performance through machine learning algorithms.
The simultaneous update of multiple AI components suggests coordinated improvements to Windows’ intelligent features.
Users can obtain this update through multiple channels including Windows Update, Business Catalog, and Server Update Services.
The update installs automatically through Windows Update and Microsoft Update for most users, maintaining Microsoft’s seamless update delivery approach.
However, Microsoft has noted a known issue with Noto fonts that users should be aware of following installation.
For enterprise administrators requiring update removal, Microsoft provides specific DISM command-line instructions, though the servicing stack update component cannot be uninstalled after installation due to its critical system function.
This update represents Microsoft’s ongoing commitment to balancing system security, performance optimization, and storage management while continuing to evolve Windows 11’s capabilities through integrated AI features.
