25-Year-Old British National Allegedly Linked to IntelBroker Charged

Federal prosecutors have filed charges against Kai West, a 25-year-old British national allegedly operating under the notorious hacker alias “IntelBroker,” in what authorities describe as one of the most prolific cybercriminal operations in recent years.

The complaint, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, accuses West of orchestrating a massive data theft and extortion scheme that caused approximately $25 million in damages to victims across multiple industries.

West, who also used the alias “Kyle Northern,” faces four federal charges including conspiracy to commit computer intrusions, conspiracy to commit wire fraud, accessing protected computers to defraud, and wire fraud.

The charges stem from alleged criminal activity spanning from December 2022 through February 2025, during which prosecutors say West led an online hacking collective that systematically targeted American companies and organizations.

The FBI investigation, led by Special Agent Carson Hughes, reveals that West operated as the leader of a hacking group initially called “The Boys” and later renamed “CyberN[——].”

The group primarily conducted its illegal activities through an underground forum known as “Forum-1,” where stolen data was regularly offered for sale to other cybercriminals.

According to the complaint, West’s operation was remarkably prolific, with the IntelBroker persona offering hacked data for sale approximately 41 times and distributing stolen information for free or forum credits an additional 117 times.

The group sought to collect at least $2 million through these illegal sales, accepting payment exclusively in Monero, a privacy-focused cryptocurrency designed to obscure transaction trails.

The alleged crimes targeted a diverse range of victims, including a major U.S. telecommunications provider, a municipal healthcare system, and multiple internet service providers.

In one particularly serious breach in March 2023, West allegedly compromised a government healthcare provider’s systems, stealing sensitive patient data belonging to 56,415 individuals, including Social Security numbers, health insurance information, and personal medical details.

Additionally, investigators found that West’s Microsoft accounts were accessed from the same IP addresses used in cyberattacks at the same time the breaches occurred.

FBI Traces Digital Footprints

Federal investigators employed sophisticated digital forensics techniques to connect the IntelBroker identity to Kai West.

The breakthrough came through an undercover FBI operation in January 2023, when agents purchased stolen data from IntelBroker using Bitcoin rather than the preferred Monero cryptocurrency.

This transaction created a traceable digital trail that led investigators to cryptocurrency accounts linked to West’s real identity.

The investigation revealed compelling evidence linking West to the IntelBroker persona, including the discovery that West’s personal email accounts were used to view YouTube videos that were subsequently posted by IntelBroker on Forum-1, often within minutes of West viewing them.

Perhaps most damaging to West’s case was the discovery of his UK provisional driving license in his personal email accounts, registered under his real name but connected to cryptocurrency accounts used for the illegal transactions.

The license photo and associated documentation provided crucial evidence linking the physical person to the digital criminal enterprise.

West’s alleged operation represents a new generation of cybercriminals who combine technical sophistication with business-like organization.

The IntelBroker persona had achieved significant notoriety within the criminal hacking community, even being identified as the “owner” of Forum-1 between August 2024 and January 2025.

If convicted on all charges, West could face decades in federal prison for his alleged role in this extensive cybercriminal conspiracy.
